A word from Advanced CCC :

    Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
  • Look for complete honesty. Dont settle for so called super "quick" advertised services, especially those that require the proper amount of effort to do the job correctly the first time. Look instead to have a job well done at a reasonable fee.
  • Look for the offering of options when you decide to hire your service company. For instance, one service method offered may be less expensive then another, if you, the customer has the option to participate in part of the service. (As in an option to back up your files, so you can save time and money).
  • Beware consultants who know only one solution to any problem. One size does not fit all. (eg Flash is not how to build every website.)
  • Look for someone with experience who knows things often don't go as expected. I always have a Plan B.
  • Not every consultant fits every customer. People good at their work take pride in their work and readily say what they cannot do. If you believe every "yes, can do" answer, you will quickly find disappointment.
  • I take the time to research good solutions for difficult problems. Someone has probably already solved your problem. I take the time to find and understand that solution and dont charge extra for this research in most cases.
  • Beware of services that make statements similar to the following : "We can fix anything and do it at lightening speed". Being a genius or a superman or woman is not the norm, and so if they were, they wouldnt be in this business. They would be on wall street or in Las Vegas. Even Einstein admitted he made mistakes and he was a genius.

    Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
  • The most asked question is about fees. Usually the next question is about time in this business. Also of prime importance is being inquisitive and either asking the service person or allowing them to be totally detailed and honest about what exactly is the problem and or what is involved in the analysis. If you find a service person not able or unwilling to answer or otherwise indifferent to the questions, Id be suspicious. You, as a customer should interact, as in asking and learning about these questions, with the service person, in terms of the best communications.

    Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
  • People who have infected computers often ask how long it will take to clean the system. They ask this because most services charge by the hour and the customer is rightly concerned about the final cost. Many sevices offer so called "Fast" services, which probably amounts to 1 or 2 hours and the customer thinks they are saving money. Through my many years of research (More then 40), Ive found that saving money by being "Fast" with services like this acually costs the customer even more in the long run. Why? because a lot of the malicious softwares out there today can NOT be properly dealt with in 1 or 2 hours. It takes time to clean a system of malware and theres no fast cures, period. So what about the cost if it should take, perhaps, many hours to do this job correctly ? The answer is to offer the customer "options". For instance, offer a flat affordable rate if the customer is willing to deliver the PC to my location, where i can spend the proper amount of time to accomplish the task correctly and at a fee that is acceptable to the customer. Or another option would be to offer the customer my pick up and delivery services. At any rate, these types of options offer affordable and complete services done correctly the FIRST time.
  • Also, some infections are not removable, as is the case with certain rootkits. So, the best option offerered here would be to backup anything on the hard drive that is important to the customer and perform a clean install of the operating system. Due to the complexity and design of some of the most dangerous rootkits, most people and some techs even, dont realize that these types of infections can NOT be removed from the operating system, as they become part of it, entwined around (writen into) and within some of the most immportant system files. Again, please be aware of services that offer to completely "clean" your system, if one type of the most dangerous rootkit is running on and controlling your PC. The truth is, as mentioned, that some rootkits can NEVER be totally removed and a clean install is inevitable to ensure your security. A service company should be honest with a customer about this truth, even if it means they might lose the job.

    Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost.
  • The most recent project was upgrading my router with a third party "free" firmware that replaces the factory firmware and makes the router perform like a $400 router. The research to accomplish this can be found online and the firmware is open code (that means it is free). To do this, a person has to have a fair amount of experience in PC technology, as the proceedure is not easy to understand. I now offer the research to do this task for my customers and determine the feasability. The only cost to the customer is my fee and if they need to buy a compatable router.

    Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
  • Most people do not realize that to accomplish a proceedure known as "VPN" (Virtual Private Networking), that you have to have a router compatable with a special protocal known as "GRE Protocal 47". (Generic Routing Encapsulation). Many routers claim they are VPN compatable and advertise as such that they are, but they dont pass the GRE protocal. Hence, they fail when VPN is initiated. Once this fact is known, it makes the the implimentation of VPN happen.

Please be careful in your descisions about who you choose to repair your PC.
